Outcome Three: Excretory System (Cells And Systems) Flashcards
What is excretion?
Waste removal.
When proteins are broken down by the cells in the body, a toxic waste is produced. What is is called?
Ammonia.
What are some of the other waste products the body must get rid of?
Urine, feces, sweat, and carbon dioxide.

The kidneys, ureter, urinary bladder and urethra.
Name the two systems that the liver belongs to.
Digestive and excretory.
What is the function of the liver in the excretory system?
To convert toxic ammonia into a less harmful substance called urea.
What is the function of the kidneys?
To filter the blood, straining out urea, water and salts.
How much urine is produced each day?
1.5 litres.
What is the function of the nephrons in the kidneys?
Filtering units of the kidneys that remove wastes from the blood and produce urine.
What are the tubes that travel from the kidneys to the bladder?
Ureters.
Where are the sweat glands located and what is their function?
They are located just below the surface of the skin. Their function is to keep you cool, and also remove excess salt from your blood.
What is urea and how is it formed?
A poisonous substance converted from highly toxic ammonia by the liver.
