Outcome Three: Digestive System (Cells And Systems) Flashcards
What are the two types of digestion?
Chemical and mechanical.
What are enzymes?
A substance created by the body to carry out chemical digestion.
How does the esophagus push food towards the stomach?
By the contractions of muscle tissue that line the esophagus.
What makes up gastric juices?
Music, hydronic acid, water, and digestive enzymes. Chemical digestion is a result of gastric juices.
What is the name of the liquid the food turns into?
Ryme.
Where is bile produced?
The pancreas.
Where is bile stored?
The gall bladder.
What does bile help the digestion of?
It helps break down lipids.
What is the main function of the small intestine?
Breaks down food from the stomach.
What are the villi and the microvilli?
Vili- small, finger like projections
Microvilli- small finger like projections that the the villi.
How long is the small intestine?
6 m long.
How long is the large intestine?
1.5 m long.
What is the main function of the large intestine?
To absorb water, vitamins and minerals.
What does the tongue do?
Helps with even chewing of food and pushing food down the throat.
What does the liver do?
Produces bile, which is used to break up fat molecules.
What does the stomach do?
Mechanical digestion from muscle movement and chemical digestion from the gastric juices.
What does the small intestine do?
Chemical digestion and the absorption of nutrients.
What does the large intestine do?
Absorbs water, vitamins and minerals and turns the undigested food into feces and moves it to the rectum.
What does the anus do?
Disposes of waste products.
What does the rectum do?
Stores feces from the large intestine unit it is expelled from the body.
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores the bile.
What does the epiglottis do?
Prevents food from entering your windpipe.
What do the salivary glands do?
Produces saliva containing enzymes to begin chemical digestion in your mouth.
What does the pancreas do?
Sends digestive enzymes into the small intestine and produces insulin to regulate blood sugarl
What does the esophagus do?
Moves the food down to the stomach through a muscle movement called peristalsis.
