Outcome One: Cells And Systems Flashcards
What six characteristics do organisms exhibit?
1) are made of cells
2) need energy
3) grow and develop
4) respond to the environment
5) reproduce
6) have adaptions for their environment
What are cells?
The basic unit of life.
What is energy?
The ability to make things move or change.
What provides energy to living organisms?
The environment.
What is a stimulus?
Anything that causes a response in a organism.
What is a response?
A reaction to a stimulus.
What are structures?
Parts of an organism that perform specific tasks.
What are functions?
Purpose or task.
What are analogous structures?
Structures that perform a similar function though they are are different structures.
What are tissues?
A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function.
What are organs?
Tissues that work together for a common function.
What are organ systems?
A group of organs that work together for a common purpose.
What are organelles?
Cells made up of specialized structures called organisms.
Define nucleus.
A fairly large, dark spherical structure that’s usually near the centre of the cell.
Define mitochondria.
The powerhouse of the cell that provides the energy needed for the cell to do all of its activities.
