Long Train Short Platform protocol
Make customers aware of platform length and to move to appropriate door
Go to first accomodated door on platform and start usual arrival proceedures but DO NOT GIVE FULL RELEASE TO DOORS
Secure DCP and manually release and open the doors by walking along the plaform to the front of the train
When dispatch signal given customers clear, return to local door, closing all open doors manually.
Complete train safety check and continue with usual self dispatch proceedure
What is a Stop/Not to Stop order?
Verbal or written instructions given by Control to stop at extra stations or not to stop at usual stations
What is Rough Riding
A term used to report issues with the track causing bumps and jolts
What to do if we experience Rough Riding?
Stop the train and immediately report it including location
What constitues an etensive signal failure and what are two methods of working through affected areas?
Two or more consecutive malfunctioning signals
Two working methods:
Temporary Block Working (TBW)
&
Emergency Special Working (ESW)
Describe the TBW method of working (10)
- Hand signaller will stand at the entrance signal to the TBW section which will be kept at danger, holding a red flag and a detonator placed on the track
- Driver will stop at hand signaller who will call signaller requesting permisson for train to enter block section.
- Hand signaller will relay relevant info and instructions to the driver with a completed RT3184 form
- Driver tells Conductor what is happening and they are entering a TBW section
- Hand signaller removwd detonator from the track and holds up yellow proceed at caution flag.
- Train passes through the TBW section at speed no more than 50mph
- At the exit signal (first working signal), another hand signaller will be present with a red flag and detonator on the line
- Driver will hand over the RT3184 and hand signaller will contact Signaller asking for permission for the train to exit the TBW section
- Hand signaller will then remove detonator and show yellow proceed at caution flag
- Train will proceed and the system can restart once train passes 200m
Describe the Emergency Special Working (ESW) method (6)
- Driver stops at the entrance signal which is the last working signal before the ESW section and will be at danger. Driver will contact signaller via GSM-R
- Signaller relays instructions and driver fills out an NR3190 (ESW ticket)
- Driver informs the Conductor and enters the ESW section
- Train passes through the ESW section and stops at the exit signal which will be at danger and may have additional signage (yellow board with EW and red line through it)
- Driver contacts signaller for permission to leave the ESW section
- Driver writes CANCELLED across the NR3190 and proceeds on their way
What changes to emergency protection need to be remembered for TBW and ESW sections?
Detonators need to be placed on opposite track and also your owm track, 1.25 miles from obstruction
Considerations for the conductor during single line working
- Platforms on opposite side to normal
- Signals may not be visible
- Delays may be likely
- Station access may be affected
Definition of a Train Accident (8)
Collision with train/rail vehicle
Collision with road vehicle
Collision with person
Collision with obstruction
Derailment
Division of train causing obstruction to over line
Fire requiring evacuation onto running lines
Fire posing danger to passing trains
Conductor priorities following an accident and if driver incapacitated
Check for obstructions on other lines
Decide the quickest method of stopping trains (usually red button)
Place TCOCs if deemed necessary
Assume role of driver, turn on hazard lights and make emergency call to signaller
When would we place detonators down before reaching full protection distance?
Tunnels
Trains oncoming
Telephons
Trailing points (junctions)
Signal box
Describe a Hazchem label
Orange sign
Top Left: Emergency Action code
Mid left: United Nations number
Low left: Specialist advice contact number
Low right: Company name and logo
Top Right: hazard warning symbol
What information must you give during emergency call about an incident involving a train carrying hazardous material
“This is a rail damgerous goods emergency call”
Follow emergency call proceed and add Emergency Action Code and UN number
What are the conductor’s responsibilities following an accidental division (4)
- Establish if anyone has fallen onto the track
- Secure gangway doors
- Make sure passengers are in a safe position on the train
- Report situation to Duty Control Manager
What are the three types of evacuation
Controlled
Emergency
Uncontrolled
Definition of a controlled evacuation
Is pre-planned, coordinated and sigaller has confirmed signal protection on all adjacent lines
Procedure for carrying out a controlled evacuation
- Get permission from Duty Control Manager and signal protection from Signaller
- Formulate a plan with the driver and make an announcement asking for competent persons to come forward
- make announcement to passengers to give evacuation instructions
- use one door only and place ladder from it to the safest side
- position two competent pwople at bottom of ladder to assist and stabilise
- position one competent person at top of the ladder to help people onto it
- position one competent person in a position of safety to direct people off of the lines
Procedure for a train to train evacuation
- get permission from Duty Control Manager and wait for them to brief staff members involved
- position two staff members on the ground to hold the ramp in place
- position one member of staff at each door of the trains involved
- assess the feasibility of the evacuation (angle, distance between trains etc) before placing down the ramp
- test the ramp yourself thoroughly before letting passengers across; one at a time on foot
- anyone that cannot cross themselves (eg wheelchair users) must remain on demic train
Procedure for emergency evacuation
- inform the driver there is an imminent threat to life on the train, place TCOCs and make emergency call on GSM-R
- create an escape route by releasing all doors on the safest side of the train
- if unable to confirm signal protection, carry out emergency protections
- ensure passengers are in a position of safety
-report situation to Duty Control Manager and await emergency services and Rail Incident Officer
Procedure following an uncontrolled evacuation
- make announcement to customers warning them of dangers and risks of alighting the train
- inform driver who will make emergency call and request signal protection
- place TCOCs on adjacent lines
Describe our actions when alerted to a fire on the train (5)
- contact driver and inform them of the situation
- turn off heaters and aircon
- take AFFF extinguisher from cab and investigate fire
- take appropriate action depending on ability to put out the fire
What do we do if we are able to put out a fire on the train (5)
Move passengers away from area and lock carriage out of use
Place competent person near the fire location with extinguisher in case it reignites
Update driver and report to Duty Control Manager; follow their instructions
Fill out Form E
The classes of fires

Class B Liquids (petrol/oil)
Class C Gases (methane/propane)
Class D Metals (magnesium/aluminium)
Class E Electrical (fuse boxes)
