moderate tenderness and swelling, decreased ROM, possible instability. moderate impairment. complete collagen fiber tears, but ligament NOT completely torn. Tx: immobilize with air splint, PT.
Ankle Sprain Grading: grade 3
significant swelling and tenderness, instability. severe impairment. complete tear or rupture of ligament. Tx: immobilization, PT, surgery maybs

When should you order an xray if there is pain in the MALLEOLAR REGION?
order an ANKLE xray if the pt has any of the following:
- bone tenderness at post edge of distal 6cm or the tip of LATERAL MALLEOLUS
- bone tenderness at post edge of distal 6cm or tip of MEDIAL MALLEOLUS
- unable to bear weight for 4steps
When should you order an xray if there is pain in the MIDFOOT REGION?
order a FOOT xray if the pt has any of the following:
- navicular bone tenderness
- base of 5th metatarsal bone tenderness
- unable to bear weight for 4steps
Who do you apply the ottawa rules to?
only people over age18
When should you order an xray if there is KNEE pain?
any of the following:
- > 55yo
- isolated patellar b tenderness
- fibular head tenderness
- can’t flex knee to 90deg
- can’t bear weight for 4steps
