What is otitis Media?
A
Inflammation of the middle ear

What causes Otitis Media?
A
A primary viral URTI leads to a build up of mucous in middle ear and blockage of the eustachen tube that runs from middle ear to nose, which then develops a secondary bacterial infection
Haemophilus Influenzae or Strep Pneumoniae

How does Otitis Media present?
A
Mainly in kids
- Erythema & bulging Drum
- Can rupture, releasing pus
- Ear Pain - Irritability - Fever

How do we treat otitis media?
A
Normally Self-Limiting
Analgesia for the Pain
Antibiotics can improve rate of recovery but must be balanced against side effects such as diarrhoea. Also not that helpful since the base infection is viral
