other types of succession pack 6 Flashcards
in what places does secondary succession occur
on bare soil where an existing community has been cleared
why does secondary succession occur more quickly than primary succession
bare soil doesn’t stay bare for long- there will be seeds of many species already lying dormant in the soil (seed bank) others are brought by wind or animals
how are pioneer species different in secondary succession? what are their adaptations?
seeds widely dispersed by the wind, rapid growth, short life cycle, abundant seed production -> ground set are adapted to take advantage of newly bare soil where there is little / no competition
where does deflected succession take place
when a community that remains stable only because human activity prevents succession from running its course
