Other neurotransmitters Flashcards

Q

Glycine

A
  • primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the spinal cord
  • made from serine by serine transhydroxymethylase and glycerate dehydrogenase
  • acts as a mandatory adjunctive neurotransmitter for glutamate receptor
  • the excitatory sites on the NMDA receptor is called non-strychnine-sensitive glycine receptor
  • strychnine-sensitive glycine receptor is an inhibitory receptor seen in the spinal cord where glycine acts independently
  • facilitating glycine transmission can help reduce negative symptoms of schizophrenia

Q

Endocannabinoids

A
  • Anandamide (a weak ligand) and 2-arachnidonylglycerol (strong ligand) are both endogenous canniboids
  • formed from arachidonic acid and ethanolamine
  • 2 types of cannabinoid receptors- centrl (CB1) and peripheral (CB2)- both bind to THC
  • anandamide lowers intraoccular pressure , decreases activity level and relieves pain

Q

Brain derived Nerve growth factor (BNGF)

A
  • may have role in long-term potentiation of memory

- polymorphism of genes may show impaired hippocampal activation and performance
