relative atomic mass
the average mass of the atoms of an element on a scale in which an atom of the carbon-12 isotope has a mass of exactly 12 units.
relative isotopic mass
the mass of a particular isotope of an element on a scale in which an atom of the carbon-12 isotope has a mass of exactly 12 units.
relative molecular mass
the mass of a molecule measured on a scale in which an atom of the carbon-12 isotope has a mass of exactly 12 units.
relative formula mass
the mass of one formula unit of a compound or molecule measured on a scale on which an atom of the carbon-12 isotope has a mass of exactly 12 units.
mole
the unit of amount of substance. It is the amount of substance that has the same number of particles (atoms, ions, molecules or electrons) as there are atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon-12 isotope.
empirical formula
the formula that tells us the simplest ratio of the different atoms present in a molecule
molecular formula
the formula that tells us the actual numbers of each type of atom in a molecule
ionisation energy
symbol: deltaHi
the energy needed to remove 1 mole of electrons from each atom in 1 mole of gaseous atoms of an element to form 1 mole of gaseous ions.
bond energy
the energy needed to break 1 mole of a particular bond in 1 mole of gaseous molecules
bond length
the average distance between nuclei of two bonded atoms in a molecule
bond polarity
The property of a shared pair of electrons being closer to one atom than the other in a covalent bond, separating electric charge along a bond, leading to a molecule or its chemical groups having a dipole moment.
free radical
unpaired electron
electronegativity
the ability of an atom to attract electron density in a covalent bond
periodicity
pattern in the change in properties of a row of elements repeated in the next row
molecules with stronger imf have more or less viscosity?
