You hold £1,000 of your client’s money in a client account. They want to do some capital works to their building, with an estimated cost of £1,500. They have requested you to progress with the works and offset the balance with next quarter’s rent. What would you do?
I would follow the RICS professional standard on client money handling (2022) which states that overdrawn balances are to be prevented and would therefore inform the client that there are not sufficient funds in their account to proceed
