Describe

The Geneleos Group, Samos, Sanctuary of Hera, ca. 550 BC :
- reason :
during the period, wealthy families used to set up monuments like this on one base and this one was on the road in the Sanctuary of Hera >> noone could miss.
BUT
figures do not interract >> might have been set up individually.
- purpose :
- devotional offering;
- advertisement of the family (inscription indicated commissioners)
>> in a style of the day to impress the crowd
- inscription :
- on the sculpture (eastern tradition);
- their names;
- on only one - name of commissioner :
- could be commissioned by different people
- representation is not necessarily of commissioner
- name of the artist
- typical
frontal archaic images BUT, as Eastern tradition goes, a bit plumper
- figures :
Phileia (mother)
Male figure
Female figure
Ornithe
Philippe
…arches
Phileia
- sits in a chair & appears to be completely covered by drapery >> could be mother - different from young girls;
- feet are visible and silhouette of legs;
- not certain if two draperies or one;
- chair is not completely carved to be stable.
Male
- pair of bare, seemingly male, feet
Female
- regiments of drapery
Ornithe
- clothing - simplistic, just indicative :
- chiton :
- thin lines;
- recting to the pull unrealisticaly, plasticaly
- epiblema :
- perfectly unrealistically arranged;
- contrast of the lines of chiton and epiblema
- hair :
- over the shoulders;
- beaded effect - not individual locks.
Philippe
- clothing :
- same
- BUT more realistic reaction to the pull (on both pulling side and opposite leg)
- back - not much carved - meant to be seen from the front
- hair :
- no on the front.
PULL of the skirt HERE - could something to do with piety and respect
…arches
- father or commissioner ;
- dressed >> not Kouros;
- gender - not certain :
- majority - male;
- some - female (breasts);
- pose : of a man at banquette (amongst women, only prostitutes were represented lying down)
- holds smth : mb, a bird (as some Korai do);
- clothing - naturalistic :
- Heavy material swaging down revealing his belly – very different from very rigid draperies of Kores.
- Large garment over the top of something very thick – very few fold.

Describe

Calf Bearer aka Moscopholos, Acropolis, ca. 560 BC, 1. 65 m :
- unlike Kouroi :
- a calf :
- mb, a priest.
- Offering a calf : male version of Kore’s offering of pomegranate or bird.
- Whoever offered a calf once to a god left this statue behind to remind the deity of one’s gesture.
- dressed :
- where the cloth beings and body ends?…
- Line of the drapery goes down along the leg – unusual garment, referred to as cloak.
- Very few folds – seems to be a very tight fitting.
- bearded :
- body :
- Muscles - in his forearms: his job was to carry cows to Acropolis >> to have such body .
- Anatomical divisions: very round navel there; abs.
- pose :
- X-pattern across the chest, still pattern
- chest - covered >> no ability to carve the chest >> upper body is elongated.
- hair :
- Cant see the neck behind the beard.
- beard - broken off >> face - a bit rectangular.
- Smoothly carved – not much individual curls;
- relief mass painted >> differentiation of face and beard. B
- face :
- the eyes a bit naturalistic:
- the eyes are big but there is not much of continuous swipe.
SIMILAR to Kouros:
- position with one leg forward with no contraposto.
- Archaic smile.

- The Rampin Rider (Horseman)
- Acropolis, Athens
- ca. 550 BC

Describe

The Rampin Rider (Horseman), Acropolis, Athens, ca. 550 BC :
- function :
from the sanctuary of Athena >> dedication.
- Structure - 2 parts, placed in different museums:
- body and horse – in Acropolis museum in Athens;
- head and the upper body – in Louvre.
- DIFFERENT :
– horse.
- not an offering << making use of it.
- to be part of a group – two men on horses, side by side;
- horses looking at each other & men – outside – would make more impact as a pair.
- horse >> the figure would be higher and draw more attention >> would be very impressive.
>> Would have been a very expensive dedication.
– turn of the head.
- at the viewers as they walk around Acropolis: there might have been an opportunity to go around them
- Beard.
Different – not left plain, there is a degree of texture.
Hair comes down in a usually heavy mass.
This is at the time when Panathenaic festival was organized in Athens and procession was a very important part of the festival (e.g. frieze on Parthenon), so they might have been a part of it.
- preserved diadem is identified as “wild celery” – price at Nemea games, Isthmia games >> maybe, they are athletic winners.
- TYPICAL :
- facial features;
- hair - a bit apart in the middle
Very ornate.
Looks like curled wool.
No added metal.
- Body.
Softly carved muscles of the chest. Frontal part is very much i_n concept with Kouroi’s_ style.
