Orientalizing Period, GENERAL

  • the innovations introduced : everything reappears after Dark Age
  • name - from “Orient”:
  • modern term (scholars realized the period was important);
  • art - lots of Eastern Influences;
  • lots of elements become standardized, codified (once introduced they become necessary, desirable)
  • UNKNOWN how they got to Greece, probably - trading:
    • probably, artists came - nothing is known about these artists

Orientalizing Period, SCULPTURE - overview

A
  • elements of Eastern Art ⇒ Greeks art (e.g. mythological creatures, orientalizing animals):
    • ​by Archaic Period, these elements - part of Greek artistic vocabulary

  • HUMAN figures:
    • scale:
      • small; late O.p. - larger (also on buildings - a_rchitectural sculpture_; first attempt to decorate buildings - with terracotta plaques);
    • material:
      • terracotta = fired clay >> they were used, e.g. as votive offerings;
      • or wood:
      • NOT bronze - too heavy for the life sized figures; expensive; takes too long;
    • more common - on vases : by the end of O.p. they realized that plate - surface - canvas for narratives;
    • use:
      • public;
      • privet - only vases;
    • purpose:
      • commemorative;
      • funeraly;
      • ritual : image of Gods or Goddesses who could stand in a temple; little offerings - once they were offered they became public.

  • The ongoing process of buildings in stone.
  • There is no real impetus for the wide spread stone architecture:

As soon as architects discovered how to do it, everything was made in this fashion, it was exploding.

  • cities & citizens - self-characterization through the association with certain gods (according to city’s goals) ≥≥ awarenes of the others

​>> public places to commemorate Gods;

  • People became rich; cities grew >> more money for art >> jobs for lots of artist. I_t continues into the Archaic period._

  • Greek city state;
  • a major or central patrolling city and all the lands (and people inhabiting them) it controls:

coloies in Asian Minor and Magna Grecia- aslo concidered as polisei

  • each - self-governingt;
  • unknown how they came to be:

​- mb, absorbtion of people into 1 group;

  • mb, they moved seeking for the job in a bigger citites;

>> there was some need for the unity.

The independent areas remained to be pretty ethnographic, like they are together because of their common ethnicity.
