What is the mechanism of Atropine
A
Competitive antagonist – Increases HR in normal subjects at all but low doses – no effect. No effect on the response to exercise. Always use >600mg.
First line in management of severe bradycardia

What conditions is Atropine used for
A
Severe bradycardia
Anticholinesterase poisoning – reduces excessive parasympathetic activity e.g after MI when vagal tone ↑

What are the side effects of Atropine
A
<300mg can transiently reduce HR. Use no less than 600mg
