What is an aim?
A statement identifying what the experimenter intends to study
What is a hypothesis?
A formal statement of the experimenters expectations of their results
What are the types of hypothesis?
Directional or non-directional
How do you know if your hypothesis is operationalised?
Variables are in a form that can be tested easily, e.g. a numerical value
What are investigator effects?
When an investigator unwittingly communicates their expectations to the participants, thus leading participants to change their natural behaviour
What are demand characteristics?
Features of an experiment that may cue participants into acting in a predictable way
What is social desirability bias?
Participants wish to present themselves in a positive light- what society expects or deems acceptable behaviour
What is a pilot study?
A small scale trial of a research study to test any aspect of the design, with a view to making improvements for the main study
