Other Antidepressants Flashcards
Mirtazapine
Blocks pre-syn a2-receptors increasing release of NE/5-HT. Also blocks 5-HT2a and 3 receptors, and histamine receptors (leads to drowsiness). Tx for depression.
Buproprion
Inhibits DA and NE reuptake. Works well in pts that dont respond to other classes, may be combined w/SSRIs. Reduces booze/drugs cravings. SE: CNS stim, psychosis, HA/N common, Wt loss, occasional seizure, unlikely to cause sexual dysfunction. Contraindicated in pts c/hx of seizures or head trauma, do not combine with drugs that lower seizure threshold (antipsychotics/TCAs). Used for depression, smoking cessation, children w/ADHD
Atomoxetine
Selective inhibitor of NE reuptake. First non-stim tx for ADHD, may increase memory/attn by increasing NE lvls. SE: GI distress and insomnia, liver damge possible. Tx for depression and ADHD.
Maprotiline
The dumb whore lists this one but doesnt give any info abt it, I guess its an antidepressant.
Amoxapine
Slight antipsychotic effect, useful in depression c/schizophrenia. Dopamine receptor antagonist-may cause PD like symptoms. SE: amenorrhea-galactorrhea, tardive dyskinesia. Tx for depression especially w/schizophrenia.
Trazodone
Partial agonist at 5-HT1a receptor. Sedating, not a good antidepressant, used more for sleep aid/pain management. SE: sedation, dizzy, hypotension, nausea, priapism.
St. Johns Wort
Block NE/5-HT and possibly DA (mechanism unknown), effective in mild/moderate depression. SE: increases photophobia. CI: MAOI, SSRI, TCA, l-dopa. May prolong general anesthetic effect: stop 2wks before surgery. Decreases effect of digoxin, warfarin, oral contraceptives.
