Q

What single nucleotide alteration causes sickle cell anaemia?

A

A to T in the haemoglobin S gene. This single nucleotide polymorphism means that the codon codes for a different amino acid (glutamate —> valine). This occurs in both of the beta chains of the haemoglobin (if only one gene then carrier)
