2 (ish) Flashcards
What is the sodium concentration of extracellular fluid?
~140 mEq/l
What is the potassium concentration of extracellular fluid?
~3.5-5 mEq/l
What is the potassium concentration of intracellular fluid?
~140 mEq/l
In an average 70kg man how much of the body weight is due to intracellular fluid?
~40% of body weight
~28 litres
In an average 70kg man how much of the body weight is due to extracellular fluid?
~20% of body weight
~ 14l
What happens if there are low levels of albumin in the blood?
The osmotic pressure in the vessels drops (as the osmolality of the vessels drop) so the oncotic pressure increase and water leaves the blood vessels into the surrounding areas causing oedema
What is oncotic pressure?
A form of osmotic pressure exerted by proteins, notably albumin, that tends to pull fluid into its solution
What is osmolarity?
The number of solute particles per litre of fluid
What is the sodium concentration of intracellular fluid?
~12 mEq/l
How much water is there in the interstitial fluid of a 70kg man?
11L
How much water is there in the intravascular fluid of a 70kg man?
3L
