- Gain [realistic] understanding of illness

A
Orders written by the physician based on the wishes expressed by the individual in his or her advanced directives or living will

A
Designed to respect pt’s autonomy & determine their wishes about future life-sustaining treatments if unable to indicate preferences

NO (varies by state)

What should we remember about competency?
A
- It’s really, really hard to determine
- It’s a very fluid thing, that is evaluated over time
- It mainly has to do with a person’s ability to understand cause & effect with self-perspective
