EYES Flashcards
If a pt has peripheral vision loss, what do you think of?
Glaucoma
If a pt has central vision loss, what do you think of?
Macular degeneration
If on PE you see optic cupping – what Dx?
Glaucoma
If a pt has a red, painful eye, with acute vison loss + some N/V – Dx?
Closed Angle Glaucoma!
What eye disorder involves slow aqueous drainage with a chronically elevated intraocular pressure?
Open Angle Glaucoma
How do we treat open angle glaucoma?
IOP lowering meds, laser trabechulae, filtering surgery
If you see drusen or white/yellow patches on eye exam – Dx?
Macular Degeneration – DRY FORM
What is the MC cause of irreversible blindness in adults?
Macular Degeneration
If there is neovascularization present in the eye – Dx?
Macular degeneration – WET FORM
Between wet and dry macular degeneration, which causes rapid vision loss?
wet
What test can we use to see if a pt has progressed from dry to wet macular degeneration?
Amsler Grid Test
How can we “tx” macular degeneration?
Vit C, E, Zinc, and Beta Carotene
What are the sxs of cataracts?
increased glare, decreased contrast sensitivity, decreased visual acuity
What is presbycusis?
“older hearing”
Sensorineural hearing loss, usually symmetrical
What would happen during a Weber vs Rinne testing for sensorineural hearing loss?
Weber = Lateralizes AWAY from impaired ear
Rinne = Normal
What would happen during a Weber vs Rinne testing for conductive hearing loss?
Weber = Lateralizes TOWARDS impaired ear
Rinne = Abnormal in impaired ear
What would happen during a Weber vs Rinne testing for central auditory processing disorder?
Weber & Rinne = Normal
In sensory hearing loss, what frequencies are lost first?
High frequencies
If a pt feels they have hearing loss, who do you refer them to?
Audiologist
If a pt has unilateral hearing loss, who do you refer to?
Otolaryngologist
If a pt has the decreased ability to focus on near objects due to the lens hardening & decreased muscular effectiveness (accommodation) – what is this known as?
Presbyopia
How do you treat presbyopia?
Near reading Rx = Concave lenses
