Analgesics
Reduce inflamm, perception of pain, intensity/duration of pain. 1-6/10
Multiple classes available
Acetaminophen
Tylenol
Pain and fever
Can cause acute liver failure
Acts in the CNS and turns pain off and inhibits heat-regulating center to reduce temp
Well tolerated, make sure dose is calculated and correct
Dosing: 10-15mg/kg per dose, not to exceed 5 doses per day
NSAIDS
Mild to moderate pain, inflammation management
Increased cardiovascular clot risks and GI bleeding
ADR: cardio, GI, Heme (longer bleeding). kindey nephritis
OTC NSAIDS
Motrin, Aleve
M: Ibuprofen
A: Naproxen
Capsaicin
Muscle/joint pain, neuropathic pain, diabetic neuropathy
Decreases substance P, inhibiting pain.
Not for wounds, bandages, or before hot shower/sauna things
topical cream
patches 8%
Lidocaine
Temporary relief of minor localized pain
Menthol and methyl salicylate
counter irritants. local minor pain
bengay, icy hot
Lidocaine
Lidoderm
temporary relief of minor local pain
blocks nerve impulses
ADR: erythema at application site
