Aphasia
Apraxia
A motor disorder
difficulty with the movement of lips and/or tongue to the right place to say the sounds
the muscles are not weak
- Better automatic speech (greetings)
Dysarthria
- slurred or slow speech that can be difficult to understand
- Can sound “impaired”
- impaired movement of the muscles for speech production- lips, tongue, vocal folds, and/or diaphragm
type and severity depend on which area of the nervous system
- Receptive Language
- auditory comprehension (listening and understanding)
- reading comprehension
- Expressive Language
verbal expression
* written expression
* non-verbal skills
Aphasia
- Impairment of understanding language- spoken words, reading gestures
+ In expressing wants ideas and thoughts with spoken words, gestures, writing
Broca’s Aphasia
expressive aphasia
has trouble speaking fluently but comprehension can be relatively preserved
telegraphic speech
Wernicke’s Aphasia
receptive aphasia
ability to grasp meaning of spoken words and sentences is impaired
poor awareness of deficits
Anomic Aphasia
Trouble word finding
some degree of anomia is seen in all of the aphasias
may call apple- red sphere
Global Aphasia
affects both receptive and expressive language skills
most patients are unable to speak much and may be limited to a single word or phrase (“Oh no”)
Success with aphasia
- establishing a connection
- making an attempt
- acknowledging difficulty
