Caused by degeneration of neurons in the substantia nigra.
These neurons produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter.

l Demyelination occurs in random and scattered areas throughout the CNS.
l When the body attempts to repair the damaged myelin sheath, sclerotic lesions or plaques are formed.
