OSX-2006 Tidal Properties Flashcards
What is a diurnal tide?
One high and one low tide
What is a semi-diurnal tide?
Two high and two low tides per day
What is the period of a lunar tide?
12.42 hours
What is it called when the solar and lunar tide are the same size?
Dodge tide - there is no tide at all
What is daily inequality?
Two consecutive tides have slightly different amplitudes
Why is the lunar period 12.42 hours??
Once the Earth has done one revolution, the moon has completed 1/28 of its orbit. Therefore meaning that the Earth has to rotate more to reaglign ith the moon.
How long is the solar tide?
12 hours exactly as the sun does not move position
When do spring tides occur?
When the sun and the moon are on the same side of the Earth so they are working together
When do neap tides occur?
When the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. Weaker tidal impact
Why does daily inequality occur?
The moon moves between +28 and -28 degrees latitude during a month, so during this cycle the tides will have one high tide larger than the other
What is M2?
M, moon and 2, is for semi-diurnal
How much energy comes from M2?
70% of energy within tides comes from M2
What is S2?
The suns equilibrium constituent
What is the daily inequality represented by?
K1 - period of 23.9 hours
The ellipticity of the moon’s orbit is represented by?
O1
