OSX-2006 - Sampling Flashcards
What is used in order to close the caps of the bottles when on a hydrowire?
Messenger
What are the two key components to keeping the integrity of the sample?
Bottles need to be clean
Stored in a cool dark place initially
Which bottles are used for silicate and nutrients?
Plastic bottles
Which bottles are used for trace metals?
Acid washed bottles
Which bottles are used for: salinity, dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity?
Glass bottles
What is the best equipment to use for testing tracing metals?
- Teflon coated Go Flo bottles on a rosette sampler
- all components and sensors are made from titanium/aluminium.
- Conducting Kevlar cable and electronic closure
Why are the bottles Teflon lined when testing for trace metals?
To minimise the trace metal contamination?
What do underwater gliders measure?
Salinity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and chlorophyll
After how many hours does the glider resurface?
6 hours
Describe the depth filter.
Mesh has fibres which are randomly orientated, creating a nominal pore size. Glass fibre filter or Quartz microfibre
Describe the membrane filter.
A sponge like filter with interconnected pores of unifrom size, absolute pore size. Used at depth
Describe the capillary pore filter.
Flat disc or etched membrane with defined holes or pores, absolute pore size. Used at surface
What is the glass fibre filter used to collect?
Particulate organic matter, chlorophyll, calcium carbonate, suspended solids
What are the advantages of a glass fibre filter?
- Strong retention of small to medium particles
- High porosity, ability to maintain high flow rates
- High loading capacity
- Can be pre-combusted to 500 degrees to remove organics
