OSX-2006 Mattias Lecture 3 Flashcards
When does resonance occur?
If you force something at its natural period
What causes the resonance to occur in a basin?
When the sea happens to be 1/4 of a wave length long, you will end up with a node at the entrance, and a very large amplitude at the inner part of the basin
What happens to a damped wave that is reflected?
The energy of the wave will continue to be reduced as it heads back out to sea
What does the energy lost to friction depend on?
The cube of velocity
What is tidal conversion?
The generation of an internal tide propagating in the stratified layers of the ocean
What does conversion depend on?
Square of the velocity
Which process dominates in shallow water?
Friction
Which process dominates in deep water?
Conversion
By how much does tidal friction slow down the Earth’s rotation?
2ms/cy
By how much does tidal friction force the moon away from the Earth?
3.8cm/yr - But it has not been constant over time
