Osteoperosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is osteoporosis?
A
A disease of ageing, characterised by the decrease in bone mass and a corresponding decrease in bone strength. With no change in the proportion of calcified to uncalcified base material
2
Q
What happens after a fracture or break if the broken parts are in close proximity?
A
Blood vessels in and around the bone rupture and bleed, releasing factors that aid repair. The clot formed calcifies to become a callus which joins the pieces together.
3
Q
What happens when the neck of femur is fractured?
A
It has a poor blood supply so when fractured incomplete repair is possible, the head of femur becomes necrotic and the whole joint must be replaced.
