What is osteoporosis?

A

A disease of ageing, characterised by the decrease in bone mass and a corresponding decrease in bone strength. With no change in the proportion of calcified to uncalcified base material

What happens after a fracture or break if the broken parts are in close proximity?

A

Blood vessels in and around the bone rupture and bleed, releasing factors that aid repair. The clot formed calcifies to become a callus which joins the pieces together.

What happens when the neck of femur is fractured?

A

It has a poor blood supply so when fractured incomplete repair is possible, the head of femur becomes necrotic and the whole joint must be replaced.
