Osteomyelitis Flashcards
What is osteomyelitis?
inflammation of bone caused by an infecting organism
where does osteomyelitis occur?
long bones of arms and legs
what are the symptoms of osteomyelitis?
swelling and pain on movement
TM for osteomyelitis?
antibiotic therapy
TM for chronic condition of osteomyelitis?
surgery
Difference between sequestrum and involucrum?
SEQUESTRUM= area of dead bone which has been deprived of earlier blood supply
INVOLUCRUM= laye of new bone around infected bone
Why can bacteria grow in bone marrow?
bone marrow can provide ample nutrients for growth of bacteria
How can bacteria kill bone?
by infection or blockage of blood supply
what is microscopic channel in bone impermeable ( not allow pass through) to as a result of bacteria infection?
body’s natural defense ( antibiotics)
As a result of bacteria infection what is microcirculation of bone vulnerable to in osteomyelitis?
thrombosis (clot) and therefor necrosis (death cell)
Stimulation of resorption by infection is much faster than?
osteoblast activity
describe the 2 routes of infection in osteomyelitis
- exogenous: open fractures, staphylococcus aureus ( from skin)
- haematogenous ( common in children): through the blood from an infection elsewhere in body . sepsis, pneumonia, streptococcus, haemophilus influenza
