Fractures Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 8 signs and symptoms of fractures?

A
  1. impaired function
  2. unnatural alignment (deformity)
  3. swelling
  4. possible muscle spasm
  5. tenderness and pain
  6. bruising or discolourisation around the break
  7. impaired sensation
  8. X- ray evidence of break

Q

What are the 4 main types of fracture?

A
  1. open: break through intact skin, bone marrow exposed to ext. env. risk infection and osteomyelitis
  2. pathologic: occurs in bone which is weakened by disease eg. osteoporosis, bone metastasis, primary bone cancer
  3. commuted: more than 2 parts bone, harder to heal with callus formation
  4. impacted: pressure/ weight that causes break, impact or crushes the rest of that bone

Q

What are the 10 classifications of fractures?

A
  1. closed= bone broken not skin
  2. open= bone broken protrude through skin
  3. greenstick= bone bent one side with incomplete fracture on other side
  4. hairline= crack in bone but bone aligned
  5. commuted= bone 3 or more pieces
  6. displaced: bone out of anatomical alignment
  7. impacted: bone fragments pushed into each other
  8. transverse: fracture line perpendicular to long axis of bone
  9. oblique= fracture line at angle to long axis of bone
  10. spiral: fracture line encircling bone

Q

describe the 4 stages of callus formation when bone is broken causing damage to surrounding tissue and periosteum

(healing of fractures)

A
  1. Formation Haematoma= Bleeding due to damage to blood vessels in cortex and marrow.
  2. Haematoma organised into fibrous n/w ( bone needs to be immobile for this to occur due to lack of integrity and strength)
  3. Invasion of osteoblasts: deposit collagen to keep bone together for remodelling
  4. Callus formation: new bone generated through calcification, old bone destroyed.
  5. Remodelling: Trabeculae formation, excess callus removed. requires exercise to develop shape.

Q

What are the 3 types of repairs for fractures?

A
  1. realignment/ reduction: closed, open, traction
  2. Immobilisation: internal fixation (i.e. prosthesis, screw, plate, nail, wire), spints and casts
  3. physiotherapy

Q

What is the difference between dislocation and subluxation

A

DISLOCATION= total and temporary loss of contact between articular cartilage

SUBLUXATION= partial loss of contact between articular surfaces of 2 bones

Q

Besides fractures, what are 4 other types of injuries of the skeletal muscle?

A
  1. STRAIN= tear/ injury to muscle or tendon ( strip sheet of fibrous CT that attaches skeletal muscles to bone)
  2. SPRAIN= tear or injury to a ligament ( bnand of fibrous CT that connects bone where they meet in a joint)
  3. AVULSION: complete sep of tendon/ lig from its bony att site
  4. MYOGLOBINURIA (RHABDOMYLOSIS)= release of myoglobin into bloodstream due to muscle damage/trauma
