Osteomalacia Flashcards
1
Q
What is osteomalacia?
A
Condition where there is defective bone mineralisation causing ‘soft’ bone due to vitD deficiency
2
Q
How does osteomalacia present?
A
- Weak bones
- Bone pain
- Muscle weakness (reduced tone)
- Bowling of long bones
- Fractures
3
Q
What is it called when this presents in children prior to the growth plate fusing?
A
Ricketts
4
Q
1) Serum levels of what is looked at to assess vitD?
2) A value of what is considered to be vitD insufficiency?
3) A value of what is considered to be vitD deficiency
A
1) 25-hydroxyvitamin D
2) 25-50 nmol/L
3) <25 nmol/L
5
Q
Name 3 other laboratory findings that may support a diagnosis of osteomalacia
A
- Low serum Ca2+
- Low serum phosphate
- High serum alkaline phosphatase
- High parathyroid hormone (secondary hyperparathyroidism)
- Xrays - osteopenia (more radiolucent bones)
- DEXA scan - low BMD
6
Q
How is osteomalacia treated?
A
Supplementary vitamin D (colecalciferol)
