Osteology from Brain/Face/Neck Regions Flashcards
Calvaria
Skull cap.
Mastoid Process
Palpable bone behind ear, next to mandible.
Occipital Condyles
On either side of foramen magnum. Connect to atlas.
Foramen Magnum
Where spinal cord emerges from brain and continues (from medulla oblongata). Also where vertebral arteries are found.
Zygomatic Arch
Joining of the zygomatic and temporal bones, forming the cheekbone.
Cribriform Plate
Anterior portion of the skull. Many ridges for olfactory nerves. In the middle sits the crista galli.
Crista Galli
Sits in between the cribriform plate. Raised protuberance.
Coronoid Process
“Shark tooth”. Forms portion of the mandible near the zygomatic arch.
Temporalis Muscle?
The zygomatic arch provides a passageway for the temporalis muscle (a key muscle involved in chewing). The coronoid process of the mandible is the bony projection where the temporalis muscle inserts.
