What are first line analgesics for OA?
A
Paracetamol
And
Topical NSAIDs ( if OA of knee or hand)

What are the second-line treatments for OA?
A
- NSAIDs/COX-2 Inhibitors
- Opiods
- Capsaicin cream
- Intra-articular corticosteroids
NOTE: Remember PPI if NSAIDs/COx-2 Inhibitors

When should you not prescribe NSAIDs or COX-2 Inhibitors?
A
If the patient is taking aspirin

What non-pharmacological treatments can be suggested?
A
- TENS
- Supports and braces
- Shock absorbing insoles or shoes

What should all people be offered as first line aswell?
A
- Weight loss help
- Advice on muscle strengthening exercises
- General aerobic fitness

Is glucosamine effective?
A
It can provide modest pain relief but and a systematic review of double blind RCTs show symptomatic benefit.
But due to limited evidence it is not prescribed on the NHS.
