What is complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)?
A
An umbrella term for a number of conditions such as reflex sympathetic dystrophy and causalgia(severe burning pain in a limb).

A
After surgery or a minor injury

What are the 2 types of CRPS?
A
- Type 1 (Most common): no demonstrable lesion to a major nerve
- Type 2 - there is a lesion to a major nerve

What are the features of CRPS?
A
- Progressive, disproportionate symptoms to the original injury/surgery
- Allodynia (pain from a non-painful stimulus)
- Temperature and skin colour changes
- Oedema and sweating
- Motor dysfunction

How is CRPS managed?
A
- Early physiotherapy is important
- Neuropathic analgesia in-line with NICE guidelines
- Specialist management (e.g. Pain team) is required
