Osteoarthritis Flashcards
1
Q
Osteoarthritis
A
*wear and tear
degenerative joint disease characterized by swelling, pain and loss of shock-absorbing CARTILAGE
2
Q
Structure of Cartilage
A
- collagen protein provides fibrous web
- proteoglycans GAGs
- water
- chondrocytes - responsible for manufacturing GAGs and collagen
3
Q
Causes & Contributors of Osteoarthritis
A
- inflammatory diet
- gluten
- solanine in nightshades
- dehydration
- wear and tear, age related collaged degradation, insulin resistance, lack of exercise, fractures, mechanical damage
4
Q
NSAIDS & Osteoarthritis
A
- address pain and inflammation but do not assist in regeneration, and may inhibit cartilage synthesis
5
Q
Nutrients for Osteoarthritis
A
Glucosamine - stimulates production of GAGs, promotes incorporation of sulfur into joints, shown to work better than medications (over time)
SAMe - shown to reduce pain and clinical symptoms with similar efficacy as meds.
MSM - required for formation of cartilage
