Q

what is a typical osteoarthritis history from a patient?

A

pain associated with loss of function. Stiffness is also a feature but secondary to pain.

Usually pain during activity and tiredness due to the excess effort required to mobilise. GP sought when simple analgesia no longer controls pain.

Q

What is the long term disadvantage of arthrodesis?

A

It adds additional stress to adjacent joints e.g. lumber spine and knee . Commonly a second operation is done later to then perform an arthroplasty.

16
Q

What are the limitation of joint replacement?

A

It wears out and cannot regenerate

it is an artificial joint not a transplant

17
Q

What are the general complications of joint replacement surgery?

A

infection
DVT
Pressure Sores

18
Q

What are some specific early complications of arthroplasty?

A

Dislocation
DVT
Infection - staph aureus, staph epidermidis, staph albus

19
Q

How bad is joint replacement infection?

A

Utter disaster

20
Q

What are some specific late complications of arthroplasty?

A

infection - bacteraemia

Loosening and wear - pretty much inevitable
