Osmosud Flashcards
What’s osmosis
Osmosis is a special type of diffusion. It’s the diffusion of water through selectively permeable membranes. Water molecules are small enough to pass throyyy the bilayer. During osmosis water molecules go from the side with higher concentration to lower concentration
What is a hypertonic solution
the fluid surrounding the cell has a higher solute concentration than the cytoplasm inside the cell. As a result water diffuses out of the cell by osmosis.
What’s an isotonic solution
the concentration of solutes inside and outside the cell is the same, therefore no movement of water occurs.
What’s a hypotonic solution
the solute concentration is higher inside the cell than outside, therefore water diffuses into the cell by osmosis.
