Osmosis and Tonicity Flashcards
Word: Water movements across a membrane
Osmosis
Condition that might cause red blood cells to burst (cytolysis)
Hypotonic
Condition that might cause plant cell to lose turgor pressure (plasmolysis); Water leaves due to high solutes, cells shrink
Hypertonic
Condition that might cause a plant cells to have good turgor pressure and be swollen
Hypotonic
H2O only entering the cell; Lysed
Hypotonic
H2O only leaving the cell; Shriveled
Hypertonic
What is diffusion?
Molecules spreading out from high -> to low concentration
What is active transport?
Not natural; molecules moving from low to high concentration. Against concentration gradient/ not natural again
What does molarity (M) refer to?
Moles/Liter
If a solution has a higher molarity, what does that tell us?
The cell will be hypertonic
What would you expect to happen to the potato in the 1 M solution of sucrose?
It’ll shrink the most
What would you expect to happen to the potato in the 0.0 M solution of sucrose?
It’ll swell the most
More water can enter the cells in a lower molarity solution, and in the higher molarity solution, the
water leaves the cells more.
