Osmosis Flashcards
What is diffusion?
movement of solute across a membrane when theres a membran concentration gradient (High to low)
What is osmosis?
Movement of the solvent due to pressure gradient
What ion concentrations are higher in the ECF? IFC?
Na, Cl, Ca, Bicarb higher ECF
K higher ICF
Osmolarity is g x [C]… what happens when g= 1, g>1?
When g=1, the solute doesnt dissociate
when g>1 solute dissociates
What is isosmotic, hyposmotic, and hyperosmotic?
Iso: [Solute] same in both
Hypo: [A] less than [B]
Hyper: [B] greater than [A]
How can osmotic pressure be measured using a U tube?
difference in height can be measured to get osmotic pressure
What is reflection coefficient?
a measure of permeability
What does it mean when reflection coefficient is 0? 1?
0: solute completely permeable = no osmosis
1: solute impermeable = osmosis must occur
Whats the normal range for osmotic pressure? for saline?
270 - (290*) - 300mOsm
Saline is 0.9%
What is the equation to estimate ones osmolality?
Osmolality = 2[Na] + [glucose]/18 + [BUN]/2.8
What happens when a solution is hyposmotic to the cell?
cell will swell
What happens when a solution is hyperosmostic (more concentrated) to the cell>?
cell will shink, forming crenate
What is tonicity?
how the cell responds when being put into a solution
Isotonic
cell didnt change volume
hypotonic
cell swelled or lysed due to swelling as water moved in
