Osmosis Flashcards
How does osmosis act when a cell contains too much water
The solution inside the cell will be more dilute than the tissue fluid on the outside of the cell, osmosis will occur.
How does osmosis act when a cell has too little water?
The solution inside the cell will become concentrated, more so than the tissue fluid, causing osmosis to happen to provide water to the cell.
Define osmosis
The net movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration of water molecules(dilute) to an area of low concentration of water molecules (concentrated), through a partially permeable membrane
What must an exchange surface have?
Thin surface, so substance only has short distance to diffuse.
Large surface area so large area to diffuse
Lots of blood vessels to transport diffused substances quickly
Well ventilated for gas exchange
