Osmosis Flashcards
Definition
Osmosis is the movement of water from a high water potential to a low water potential through a differentially permeable membrane
Endosmosis
The egg will swell up and shrink. This means it is a hypotonic solution. Water moves, because of osmosis, through the cell from a high water potential to a low water potential. Due to the water having a high water potential, water will move into the cell
Exosmosis
The egg shrivels and floats. The egg is in a hypertonic solution. It loses water through osmosis to its environment (the concentration salt solution). It moves from a high water potential (the egg) to a low water potential. This causes the egg cell to be lighter and float to the top.
