Osmoregulation (PPT 6-7) [U2/ T1] Flashcards
(NOT COMPLETE)
1
Q
Explain water balance and why and how water moves?
A
Maintaining a balance between water intake and water loss. Water moves due to osmosis which is governed by solute concentrations.
2
Q
What are the two approaches to water balance?
A
1) Osmoconformer
2) Osmoregulator
3
Q
What does osmoconformer include?
A
- Conform to the external environment and do not regulate
- Mostly marine animals
4
Q
What does osmoregulator include?
A
- Regulate their internal osmotic environment and are independent of their environment
- Expand energy to control water uptake an loss
5
Q
What is a hyperosmotic solution?
A
- A solution that has a higher solute concentration than another solution.
(E.g. Kids having too much sugar and going hyper)
[More solute, less water]
6
Q
What is a hypoosmotic solution?
A
- A solution that has a lower solute concentration than another solution.
(E.g. Think O as in filled with lots of water)
[Less solute, more water]
