Osmoregulation Flashcards
State the purpose of the loop of henle
Takes sodium, water & chlorine out of the blood
What does the loop of henle allow?
Reabsorption
What does osmoregulation control?
Amount of water and salt in the body
What does osmoregulation regulate?
Osmotic pressure
State a feature of osmoregulation
Physiological process
What does osmoregulation use?
Osmoreceptors & endocrine system
Which organ detects the change in the body’s water content?
Hypothalamus
State the impact on cells if the concentration of solutes is too high
Cells will shrivel up
State the impact on cells if the concentration of solutes is too low
Cells will take in water and explode
Outline what happens when the body is dehydrated
The volume of water in the blood is low, so osmoreceptors send a response to the pituitary gland to release Ash - which increases the permeability of the collection duct & allows more water to be reabsorbed by the kidneys, meaning that there will be a lower volume of dilute urine going to the bladder
Where are osmoreceptors located?
Hypothalamus
Which hormone does the pituitary gland release if you are dehydrated?
ADH
