Osgood Schlatters Flashcards
What is osgood schlatters?
An osteochondrosis which is an issue with bone growth.
Involves an inflamed patella tendon at the junction with tibial tuberosity (elevated portion of bone proximal side of tibia).
What are the predisposing factors of osgood schlatters?
Occurs as a result of puberty most commonly in boys aged 13-15 years.
Because of rapid bone growth causing a tightening of quadricep meaning when exercising the patella tendon is under greater force resulting in a greater pull on tendon junction.
High levels of activity during a period of rapid growth.
How would you treat osgood schlatters?
Based on severity of symptoms, mild pain might not require treatment as would pass with time, however more severe pain and swelling requires rest and ice until symptoms disappear.
