Chrondomalacia Patellae Flashcards
What is chrondomalacia patellae also known as?
Runners knee
What are chrondomalacia patellae’s predisposing factors?
Occurs as a result of overuse where too much friction is produced when patella glides over wrong part of the femur.
This can be as a result of a muscular imbalance in the quadricep femoris between the vastus medial is and the vastus lateralis causing the patella to pull to one side of the knee over either the lateral or medial condyle.
What is chrondomalacia patellae’s?
Cartilage on the underside of the patella becomes worn down which causes pain in the knee.
How is chrondomalacia patellae treated?
Rest so less pressure is put on the knees.
Ice helps to reduce inflammation.
Physical therapy to help with muscular imbalance.
Occasionally requires surgery to realign the knee.
