Hamstring Strain Flashcards
What is a hamstring strain?
Tears to the hamstring, can be in the form of lots of micro tears across the muscle belly but most severe when one large tear occurs.
What are the predisposing factors to hamstring strain?
Often a result of muscular imbalance between quad and hamstring meaning force production from quads cannot be counteracted by hamstrings resulting in too much strain being put on the muscle.
Symptoms of a hamstring strain?
Pain on sitting and stretching
Straight leg raise for diagnosis
How could you prevent a hamstring strain?
Appropriate warm up prior to activity.
How would you treat a hamstring strain?
Initially, rest, ice, compression and elevation reduces haemorrhaging
Target achieving full range of motion as pain allows with stretches
Progressive strength exercises (static, concentric/eccentric, functional)
Muscle balance targeting to reduce likelihood of recurrence (should be 2/3rds force production in the hamstrings compared to he quads)
