OrthoPods Flashcards
Most meniscal tears are produced by what motion?
flexion and rapid rotation.
Volkmann’s ischemic contracture
vascular injury (often from trauma/ compartment syndrome) that leads to a deformity
glenohumeral joint, the humeral head usually dislocates primarily in which direction?
anterior
What growth plate injury has the worst prognosis
crush injury of the growth plate
Salter fx pneumonic
1 S = Slip (separated or straight across). Fracture of the cartilage of the physis (growth plate)
2 A = Above. The fracture lies above the physis, or Away from the joint.
3 L = Lower. The fracture is below the physis in the epiphysis.
4 TE = Through Everything. The fracture is through the metaphysis, physis, and epiphysis.
5- R = Rammed (crushed). The physis has been crushed.
Colles’ fracture
fracture of the distal radius with dorsal radial displacement
An injury to the radial nerve at the wrist would cause
sensory abnormalities, including the thenar pad and thumb web
more medial= wrist drop
s Monteggia’s deformity
Dislocation of the radial head with a fx of the proximal 1/3 of the ulna
posterior dislocations of humerus are seen in special situations such as?
- epileptiform convulsion
- electroshock therapy
Greenstick fractures
- children’s bones are able to bend to a greater degree vs adults
- fx may occur only at the site of maximal cortical stress but not at the opposite cortex
osteoid osteoma
severe pain that is characteristically relieved by aspirin.
CXR: lesion appears as a small
lucency (usually <1.0 cm) surrounded by reactive sclerosis
Osteitis fibrosa cystica is commonly associated with
hyperparathyroidism
Hemorrhagic cystic lesions (brown tumors) usually occur in the long bones.
Osteitis deformans
aka Paget’s disease.
Osteopetrosis
rare skeletal deformity associated with increased density of the bones.
