MED- ID Flashcards
Otitis externa in old people
risks/ bug
This infection usually occurs in older diabetics and
is almost always caused by P. aeruginosa
condylomata lata
specific for secondary syphilis
coryza
catarrhal inflammation of the mucous membrane in the nose, caused especially by a cold or by hay fever
Pneumonia cause bacteria with cholesterol “wall”
m pneumonia
cannot gram stain
m pneumonia s/s
atypical walking pneumonia
xray worse than patient- patchy infiltrate
m pneumonia demographic and rx
↑ in young adults (< 30)
no cell wall, so rx= macrolide (erythromycin)
m pneumonia test
high titers of IgM cold
agglutinins.
IgM are directed to the I antigen on the erythrocyte membrane–> lysis of cells
Erythromycin is?
a macrolide
Mono cause and s/s?
EBV
-fever, pharyngitis, tender LAD, and reactive lymphocytosis
Mono lymph cells?
a-typical lymph cells (mostly T cells)
↑ lymph–> ↑ liver/spleen size
EBV targets?
CD 21 to infect B cells. EBV remains latent in b cells
strep vs mono
strep= kids.
mono= teens/edults
Mono with amoxicillin
if penicillin family is given in mono, it will lead to a rash
EBV cancers
B cell lymphoma (both burkitt and hodgkin)
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
oral hairy leukoplakia (in HIV) - not actually cancer tho
EBV testing
A heterophile antibody test should be performed.
“mono spot”
