orthopedics Flashcards
Bone remodeling in:
rabbits
Mouserats
Other rodents
Rabbits have haversian systems like a dog or cat, just with a thinner cortex.
Mouserats have a “more primitive” bone structure so remodeling occurs differently
Other rodents are “unknown” b/c they aren’t used as research models.
???
Never use a screw/ESF pin bigger than
35-40% diameter of the bone (in sheep)
15% in rabbits! Rabbits have brittle-ass bones!
IM pins should be
50% diameter of the medullary cavity
An IM pin is good for what type of fracture?
Long-oblique/ spiral. Think bending forces (the main one that an IM pin counteracts).
Plating is good for what bones, and bad for what?
Good for ferret humeri and femurs. Bad for rabbit anything.
How would you fix a scapular fracture?
I mean I would fix it by referring that patient
But otherwise: if not involving the joint, cage rest (or cage rest and a Velpeau sling for rabbits). If involving the joint, consider crossed K-wires or a tension band.
Humeral fracture: How fixy?
Ferret: bone plate; Rabbit: IM pin with ESF tie-in
Nobody: Bandage
r/u fx: how fixy?
Generally, splint/bandage. Can pin an ulna, never a radius. ESF also an option.
Femur fx: How fixy?
Oftentimes cage rest; ferrets plate; rabbits IM pin/ESF
mandibular fractures: how fixy?
Generally nothing. Huge amounts of muscle stabilizing the mandible. If the symphisis is separated, could wire together OR COULD GLUE TOGETHER THE INCISORS
Elbow luxations are managed differently in a ferret vs a rabbit. How?
Rabbits: flex the elbow after reduction, put in a Velpeau sling.
Ferrets: EXTEND the elbow (E, E, E, E), spica splint
Rabbit hip lux recommendations have changed recently. If conservative tx fails, what next?
Open reduction and iliofemoral suture may have a better outcome than an FHO
