Orthodontic Assessment Flashcards
What age should brief orthodontic assessment be carried out ?
9
What age should comprehensive orthodontic assessment be carried out ?
11-12 - when canines erupt.
What are Andrew’s 6 keys which describe an ‘ideal occlusion’ ?
- Molar relationship - distal surface of DB cusp of upper 1st permanent molar occludes with mesial surface of MB cusp of lower 2nd molar.
- Crown angulation.
- Crown inclination.
- No rotations.
- No crowding.
- Flat occlusal plane - Curve of Spee.
Define malocclusion.
Significant deviations from ideal occlusion which may be considered unsatisfactory aesthetically or functionally.
What are medical contraindications for orthodontic treatment ?
Ni or latex allergy.
Epilepsy.
Regular imaging.
Drugs.
What are dental contraindications for orthodontic treatment ?
Previous trauma or RCT.
What are 3 habits which might cause need for orthodontic treatment ?
Digit sucking.
Lower lip sucking.
Tongue thrust.
What are the four occlusal features of a digit sucking habit ?
Proclination of upper anteriors.
Inclincation of lower anteriors.
Localised AOB or in complete overbite.
Narrow upper arch +/- unilateral posterior crossbite.
What three planes should EO be taken from ?
Anteroposterior.
Lateral.
Vertical.
Define Class I skeletal base relationship.
Maxilla 2-3mm in front of mandible.
Define Class II skeletal base relationship.
Maxilla greater than 3mm in front of mandible.
Define Class III skeletal base relationship.
Mandible in front of maxilla.
Where should Frankfort and mandibular plane meet ?
External occipital protuberance.
Define competent lip.
Meet at rest with relaxed mentalis.
Define incompetent lip.
Do not meet at rest with relaxed mentalis.
What is the occlusal consequence of a lip trap ?
Proclination of upper teeth.
What is the occlusal consequence of hyperactive lower lip ?
Retroclination of lower teeth.
What is the BSI Classification definition for Class I incisor relationship ?
Lower incisor edges occlude with or lie immediately below cingulum plateau of upper central incisors.
What is the BSI Classification definition for Class II Div 1 incisor relationship ?
Upper incisors are proclaimed or of average inclination and there is an increase in overjet.
What is the BSI Classification definition for Class II Div 2 incisor relationship ?
Upper centrals are retroclined i.e. overjet usually minimal or increased.
What is the BSI Classification definition for Class III incisor relationship ?
Lower incisor edges anterior to cingulum plateau of upper incisors, overjet reduced or reversed.
What special investigations can be used for orthodontic treatment assessment ?
OPT, lateral ceph, maxillary anterior occlusal.
Vitality test.
