Facial Growth Flashcards
What is a suture ?
Specialised fibrous joints situated between intramembranous bone with band of connective tissue which has osteogenic cells in centre and the most peripheral cells provide new bone growth.
What stimulates growth at sutures ?
Areas of tension in response to growing structures separating the bone i.e. growth of calvarium in response to development of the brain.
Where are synchondroses located in the skull ?
Between ethmoid, sphenoid and occipital bones.
What are the 3 sites of facial growth ?
Sutures, synchondroses, surface deposition.
What are synchondroses ?
Cartilage-growth centre with growth occurring in both directions, bones either side are moved apart as growth takes place.
What does drift (or cortical drift) mean in relation to surface deposition ?
Change in position of bone due to remodelling.
Up until what age, does the cranial vault continue to expand in response to growing brain ?
7 years old.
Between what ages does greatest growth in the cranial vault occur ?
Within first 3 years.
What does pneumatisation mean ?
Continued growth of forehead to accommodate expanding air sinuses.
Where do fontanelles exist ?
Where more than 2 bones meet.
When should all fontanelles close by ?
18 months.
What allows radial expansion ?
Deposition and resorption on outer and inner surfaces.
What are the two ways growth occurs in cranial base ?
Endochondral ossification and surface remodelling.
When does sphenoid-ethmoidal synchondrosis fuse ?
7 years old.
When does sphenoid-occipital synchondrosis fuse ?
13-15 years old.
