What is the indication for insertion of an OPA?
A
- Unconscious pt where there is a need to actively maintain the airway by displacing the tongue anteriorly
- Bite block to support ETT placement.

What are the 3 contraindications for OPA insertion?
A
- Trismus
- Present gag reflex
- Any pt suspected of having neurological injury (gag response)

What are the 3 clinical precautions to OPA insertion?
A
- Ensure correct measurement to avoid damaging soft posterior structures
- A modified technique is used for paediatrics to avoid palate trauma
- An OPA does not protect against aspiration

How is an OPA measured?
A
From angle of jaw to the middle of the incisor.

For paediatric patients, is the tip of the OPA pointing up toward the roof of the mouth or down toward the tongue on insertion?
A
Down, toward tongue.
